Upcell Alliance Lisbon Event Recap
Bridging the Battery Value Chain Across Europe, North America, and Asia-Pacific
Upcell Alliance, in partnership with Battery Cluster Portugal, successfully hosted the Upcell Lisbon Event on April 8–9, 2026. Held at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) in Lisbon, the two-day program convened leading industry stakeholders, researchers, and policymakers. The event focused on recent developments and collaborative projects in the EU and NAM, as well as bridges between EU/NAM and Asia-Pacific.
Gathering + 180 attendees, the event highlighted the importance of having a competitive battery value chain through innovation, collaboration, and global engagement.
Event Highlights
The program of the two-day event opened with a market and strategy overview from OCO Global, which set the context for examining Europe’s industrial capabilities and future growth opportunities. This led seamlessly into sessions featuring experts from across the manufacturing landscape, who outlined progress in scaling battery production, strengthening supply chains, and addressing key technological challenges.
The conversation then moved toward research and sustainability, where contributions from Pomega Energy and IST highlighted how scientific innovation and circular-economy approaches are reshaping the sector. Likewise, a subsequent materials and recycling panel further explored the strategic role of critical raw materials and the technologies required to secure long-term resilience.
Building on this, presentations from Politecnico di Milano, Comau, Ametek, Verkor, and MIXACO demonstrated how digitalisation and advanced engineering are improving process efficiency and accelerating industrial readiness. These technical insights provided a natural transition into the second day, which focused on global collaboration. Representatives from Inobat, CATL, Bühler AG, and CVX Ventures examined how EU, NAM, and APAC stakeholders can deepen cooperation to meet rising global demand.
In addition, the program explored emerging applications beyond electric mobility, with discussions centred on stationary energy storage, industrial use cases, and renewable energy integration, highlighting the sector’s widening scope and strategic relevance.
Finally, the event provided networking opportunities and a platform to recognize both innovation and engagement across the ecosystem. The second edition of the Upcell Young Scientist Award showcased the contributions of emerging researchers in the battery field, while the event also acknowledged the continued support of Dominique Ligeois in advancing industrial development within the sector.
Looking ahead
As the Upcell Alliance continues its global expansion, the connections made in Lisbon, supported by Battery Cluster Portugal and Instituto Superior Técnico, will contribute to the alliance’s upcoming activities.
The momentum from these two days will continue, in addition, to support collaboration across the global battery industry.
